SKINPROTECTION
You are probably already familiar with the positive effects of the sun. When shining, almost everything looks more beautiful and alive. Going for a walk, a day at the beach or just having a cup of coffee outside, it all becomes that much more enjoyable!
However, the sun unfortunately also has a hazard, namely skin damage. Due to the sun’s UV radiation, your skin can be permanently damaged, which can lead to skin cancer. In the Netherlands, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. Luckily, you can reduce the risk of skin cancer by properly protecting yourself from the sun. Safety measures you can take are for example seeking shade when the sun is bright (keep out), use sunscreen (apply) and wearing UV-resistant clothing (dress).
UVA and UVB
The sun’s radiation can be divided into two different types; UVa and UVb. UVa is present all year round, even when the sun is not visible. The radiation of type UVa goes right through clouds and glass, so it can have a negative effect on your skin even when the sun is not bright out. UVa radiation thereby can cause damages and age the skin faster.
UVb is present on days when the sun shines visibly brighter. This is of most importance in the late afternoon hours of spring and summer. UVb is also the radiation that produces vitamine D and will give you a tan. It can, however, burn your skin and cause damage, which can cause skin cancer at a later age.
So protect yourself well against both types of rays!
